The second generation, 86c, was introduced in 1981 and finished production in 1994. It was produced as Coupe and Wagon as three-door hatchbacks. The production was moved to Spain. More than 2 million cars are provided for five years. It was considered a supermini car, and it was one of the biggest in the industry. It was used for the further development of the G40 version. In 1981 the engine was 1.1 liter and developed to 1.3 liters in 1983. The car also had a stop-start ignition system. The biggest competitors at the time were Peugeot 205 and Fiat Uno. It was considered a reliable and quality vehicle. Various engines were available from 1093 cc to 1272cc petrol with up to 111hp.
In 1990 is introduced the facelift version with a new interior and bigger bumpers remaining with the same body style from the previous model. It also used the same four-cylinder engines and carburetor. It was running with up to 170 km per hour. The Coupe was the sold the most.
Volkswagen Polo Mk3, also known as Mark 4 and Typ 6N, was introduced in 1994 as a three-door and five-door hatchback. It is the first model to be offered with rear side doors. It remained with the previous engines and introduced a new 1.4 and 1.6 petrol and 1.9 diesel engines. The body panels were similar to SEAT.
