It was introduced in 1974 in seven types, 245DL, 244GL, 242GT, 242DL, 242L, 245L, and 244DL. It was a type sedan and station wagon with two and four doors. The body was the same as in 140 and 164. Large front and rear end crumple zones were set to ensure safety. They were with front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and brakes with the master cylinder. The 240 series differentiated from those before with the shovelnose design. The rest of the features were the same as in 140 and 160. In 1978 facelift is added to the models. They were offered with three-speed automatic transmission, four-speed manual transmission, and overdrive. In 1978 chrome surround and black mirrors become a standard, and interval wipers were introduced. In 1979 a full facelift was added to the models with a six-cylinder diesel engine. A more powerful engine of 2.8 liters and turbo were introduced. Oxygen sensor was inserted in North America's market. Four-speed automatic option and a taller grille were added in 1984. Approximately one-third of the models sold were station wagons. The main engines used in the cars were a red block with either 2 or 2.3 liters and four cylinders. Since 1979 V6 engines also became available in some models. In the US the models were with pushrod B20F and B21F fuel-injected with about 106 hp. In the European and Australian market the models were with side turn signal repeaters, daily and parking lamps and diesel engine. The new GLT model had 140ps 2.3 liters fuel-injected engine with manual transmission and 2.7 liters V6 with 141ps. In the North American market, the models introduced were with an exterior lighting system, speedometer and odometer, side markers reflectors, fog lamps, and block heaters.
