The first generation Boxster was introduced in 1996 and the production for which ended in 2004.
Its name comes from the boxer engine with a 2.5-liter flat six-cylinder engine. It was produced in Stuttgart, and it was generating the most for Porsche until the introduction of Cayenne.
Models 986 and 987 were with the first not-front- water-cooled engine.
The Boxter is with mid-engine and better weight distribution. In 2002 small changes on the design were done. The model received a minor facelift, air intake, and more clear indicators together with new wheel designs.
The second generation became available in 2005, and their production ended in 2012. The regular engine was 2.7L flat-six. Model Boxster S was with a 3.2L engine.
In 2007 the 3.2L were upgraded to 3.4L, and VarioCam Plus was introduced which increased the power. With this new introduction, the model became similar with Cayman. It was with 5-speed transmission and six-speed manual transaxle. Five-speed automatic Tiptronic was also available on some versions. The models were offered with the 7-speed gearbox in 2008. Also, day time running lights were an option.
The third generation was introduced in 2012, and the production for which stopped in 2016. It consisted of updated design, transmission, and engine. The weight was reduced. It was with 2.7liter flat6-engine and 3.4liter on the sport model. They were with 6 and seven-speed and were considered more fast and more fuel efficient. 981 was released in 2013, consisting of a full front track, new interior, and longer wheelbase, again with 6 and seven-speed transmission. They are considered the best handling sports cars at any price.
The fourth generation was launched in 2016 and is still in production. Now the Boxster's advertising was changed to Porsche 718. It was with four flat turbocharged engine instead of 6 and win over the car with more powerful engines because of its lightweight. It is also with a low consumption a 2.0 and 2.5 L engine and up to 361 bhp
The back of the car was the main improvement in the fourth generation, also the bumper and the mirrors. The exterior reminds of the third generation, while the interior reminds of 981 Boxster and Porsche 911.2. It is considered more advanced mechanically than the previous model. The acceleration is faster with increased comfort of driving.
