They were produced between 1976 and 1989 as a two-door coupe with 2.8-3.5 liters M30, S38 and M88I six cylinders engines. The first generation was named E24, with BMW M30 six-cylinder engines. BMW M635CSi is the first M6 model and is with M88 six-cylinder engine. It is also known as M6. In 1978 was introduced 635 CSI with five-speed manual transmission, rear spoiler and M90 engine with 215 hp and catalytic converter. In 1979 638CSi was added with a 2.8-liter engine and anti-lock braking system and fuel injection. In 1980 was adapted the Bosch Motronic, and a locking system accessible from the passengers' door. In 1982 were made improvements on the exterior, interior, and the suspension. The engine was updated to 3430 cc M90. 4-speed automatic transmission and 5-speed manual were then available. M version was also introduced in 1983 with 282hp. About 4 100 were created. 630 Cs and 633 CSI were the first models produced, based on E12 5 Series. Approximately 86 000 were built. They had front suspension and rear independent semi-trailing arms. In 1982 it was updated with twin-pivot lower control arms and improved rear suspension. The steering had a recirculating ball system. They were available with 4-speed manual transmission, 3-speed automatic transmission, and five-speed manual transmission. In 1983 was introduced and four-speed automatic transmission. They were able to reach from 215 to 255 km per hour. Csi was with 174 hp M30B32 engine. They were also available with a 5-speed manual and three-speed automatic transmission. 630CSi was introduced in 1977 with 3 liters engine and 176hp with fuel injection. 635CSi was launched in 1985 with M30B34 engine with 182 hp. A luxury model was presented for North America with leather headliner and an automatic gearbox. In 1988 its engine was upgraded to 3.4 liters with 208hp and self-leveling rear suspension. In 1987 a single design of the spoilers was set worldwide, and the engine was updated to M30B35, which added additional 25hp. In North America and Japan was also introduced M6 with S38 engine, catalytic converter, and 256hp. Beverage chiller, air conditioning, and heating for the seats were also available.
